A penny saved is a penny earned is a well known proverb which most probably originated in the 17th century. A thousand years earlier, our beloved Prophet ﷺ showed us how to manage our personal finances and encouraged moderation in spending and saving our resources.
In this day and age of unabated consumerism, an always available line of credit and our greedy, comfort-loving selves, one may easily find himself spending beyond his means. The Prophet ﷺ instructs us to control our spending by means of which we may find our current salaries or income to be sufficient for our needs. Imbalance in spending may result in a cycle where one consumes more than required and then needs more income to feed his greed.
Ibn ‘Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If the son of Adam possessed a valley full of gold he would want to have two valleys, yet his mouth will only be filled by earth. Allah turns towards those who turn in repentance.”
May Allah SWT protect us from the evils of consumerism and provide us lawful rizq so that we could lead our lives in a dignified way.
